One unexpected (and, honestly, not really important) pandemic phenomenon is how, in the early days of lockdown, I was completely inundated with things to subscribe to, sign up for, join, etc. I know all the texts with links to concerts and online classes came from a place of love, but suddenly I was drowning in digital opportunities I felt like I couldn’t miss. And nearly two years later, my inbox is still bogged down with various newsletters and subscriptions to art sites, games, and I don’t even know what else.

Is this you, too? Even if you managed to stave off the pandemic onslaught of digital content and memberships, I bet you have one or two or thirteen things you don’t need coming your way (or to be paying for!) anymore.

This weekend we’re going to take one small step to chip away at this particular mountain.

This Weekend: Cancel a Subscription

One of the trickiest things about digital subscriptions is figuring out what they actually are. Luckily, you can check your paid app subscriptions on your phone pretty easily. If you have an iPhone, go to Settings > Your Name > Subscriptions. You’ll see everything that’s active and when your next billing date is. You can easily cancel by clicking on any subscription. On an Android, go to Settings > Google > Manage your Google Account > Payments & Subscriptions and continue from there.

When it comes to email subscriptions, services like Truebill and Unroll.me help streamline the seemingly monumental task of finding and dealing with unwanted newsletters and promotions. Doing so will make a dent in the avalanche of clutter that might not take up physical space, but that adds to the weight of things you “have” and have to do.

While your project this weekend is to cancel just one subscription, we think you may just cancel a bunch and make a molehill out of a mountain.

Sorry, this list is no longer accepting subscriptions.

Feel free to subscribe to our other emails.

You can catch up with weekend projects right here. Share your progress with us and others by posting updates and photos on Instagram and Twitter with the hashtag #atweekendproject.

Remember: This is about improvement, not perfection. Each week you can either choose to work on the assignment we’ve sent you, or tackle another project you’ve been meaning to get to. It’s also completely okay to skip a weekend if you’re busy or not feeling the assignment.
