Spooky season is here! If you’re already putting up the Halloween bunting and carving out your jack-o’-lanterns, you’re not alone.

A new study from Lombardo Homes has found that 41% of Americans start decorating for Halloween in the first week of October, adorning their homes with frightful decor and seasonal displays that certainly up the scare factor.

In addition, the company analyzed over 1,000 Halloween decoration search terms in Google to discover the most popular Halloween decorations in the U.S. They also polled 1,000 homeowners to better understand national trends in Halloween home decor.

The average American spends $145 on Halloween decorations each year and 3.3 hours decorating their homes, but which decorations do we see the most?

The West Coast has a thing for bats, with the furry flying mammals dominating search terms across California, Nevada, and Idaho. One fun way to add bat-themed decor into your home this Halloween is with Tempaper’s “Flying Bats” decal ($34.99).

Skeletons were another unsurprising choice, as the bone-chilling decoration came out on top in several states, including Oregon, Colorado, Utah, Missouri, and Ohio. No doubt you’ll see our fave 12-foot skeleton, The Home Depot‘s LifeEyes.

Pumpkins are a hugely popular pick among the East Coast, appearing as the top search term in New Jersey, Virginia, North Carolina, and West Virginia.

The midwest are a huge fan of corn stalks, with Iowa, Indiana, and Wisconsin preferring to decorate with them. If you don’t think corn stalks are scary, think again, because they’re the center of many edge-of-your-seat horrors. Think “Signs” (2001), “Jeepers Creepers” (2001), and “A Quiet Place” (2018).

Spiders (no, thanks) are favored in just one state: New Mexico. People in Arizona are partial to a Grim Reaper decoration at Halloween, while Oklahoma loves to decorate with mummies.
